LG TV Remote not Working (Easiest Fix)

Mkpoikana Otu - Tech Gorilla AuthorByMkpoikana Otu April 4, 2025April 4, 2025

The last thing you want to be dealing with when entertaining yourself with the TV is an unresponsive LG remote. This problem could come in the form of unresponsive buttons, connectivity issues, or physical damage. But the good news is that troubleshooting this problem is easy and you can restore your remote’s functionality in a few minutes. Let’s show you how.

How to Fix LG TV Remote

If your LG TV remote is not working, there are several troubleshooting steps you can follow to identify and resolve the issue. Here’s a comprehensive guide to fixing your remote:

1. Check and Replace Batteries

Make sure the batteries are properly installed and have sufficient charge. Weak or dead batteries are often the primary cause of remote issues .Replace the batteries with fresh ones if the POWER button does not light up when pressed, then check if it works.

2. Remove Obstructions

The remote may not function properly if there are objects blocking the infrared receiver on the TV. Be sure that there is a clear line of sight between the remote and the TV. In rare cases devices like soundbars or other electronics near the TV could interfere with signals so reposition them to see if the remote.

3. Clean the Remote

Dirt or debris under the buttons can prevent them from making proper contact with the circuit board. Use a slightly damp cloth with rubbing alcohol to clean the surface of the remote. For deeper cleaning, press each button firmly multiple times to dislodge any trapped dirt.

5. Disconnect HDMI Devices

HDMI-connected devices may sometimes interfere with remote signals. Disconnect all HDMI cables from your TV, then reconnect them one by one while testing the remote after each connection.

7. Consult Your Manual or Support

If none of these steps work, refer to your LG remote control manual for model-specific instructions. Contact LG’s customer support for further assistance or order a replacement remote if necessary.

How to Fix LG Magic Remote

1. Reset Your Remote

For Magic Remotes: Deregister it by pressing and holding the HOME and BACK buttons for 5 seconds until the POWER button flashes. Re-register it by pointing at your TV and pressing OK. For standard remotes, remove batteries, press all buttons firmly for 15 seconds, reinstall batteries, and test functionality.

2. Check if the Remote is in Standby Mode

The Magic Remote goes into standby mode when it is not used for a while, causing the pointer to disappear from the screen. To wake it up, shake the remote or roll the scroll wheel.

3. Check Bluetooth Connectivity (Magic Remote)

Use your smartphone’s Bluetooth menu to check if your Magic Remote is emitting a signal (LGE MRXX should appear on the device list). If no signal is detected, this may indicate a malfunction, requiring replacement.

4. Replace the Batteries

If the remote is completely unresponsive, the batteries might be dead or low. Replace the batteries with fresh ones. Make sure you don’t mix old and new batteries, as this may affect performance. Low batteries may allow the remote to turn the TV on or off but not control other functions.

Ensure the TV Can Receive Infrared Signals

The power button on the remote operates via infrared (IR), so point the remote directly at the TV’s IR receiver and make sure nothing, like a soundbar, is blocking the receiver. Also check if the TV is plugged into a working power socket and try turning it on using the TV’s built-in power button.

Check for Wi-Fi Interference

A nearby Wi-Fi access point may interfere with the Bluetooth connection between the remote and the TV. Move any Wi-Fi access points away from the TV. Try using the remote again to see if the issue is resolved.
