LG TV Keeps Turning Off (Best Fixes)

Mkpoikana Otu - Tech Gorilla AuthorByMkpoikana Otu April 10, 2025April 10, 2025

Do you know why your LG TV keeps turning? The reason could vary depending on your TV brand or model. It could be a simple issue like power outlet damage, auto power off settings and software glitches. However, the issue could stem from a faulty hardware component, such as the power board or main control board. Let’s walk you through all the solutions for these problems.

LG TV Keep Turning Off: How to Fix It

1. Basic Checks

When your LG TV keeps turning off,  you need to start troubleshooting by carrying out basic checks. Sometimes the problem could just be something very simple like a faulty socket. Here are the basic things you should check:

Check the Power Supply

Make sure the power cord is firmly connected to both the TV and the wall outlet. A loose connection can interrupt power flow which will cause the TV to trip off intermittently.

2. Test the outlet by plugging in another device to confirm it is functioning properly. If the outlet isn’t working, plug your TV on a different outlet to see if it works. If the TV functions properly on a different outlet, then change the TV outlet

3. If you’re using a surge protector, check if it’s operational or bypass it temporarily by plugging the TV directly into the wall socket. If the TV works well when plugged directly, then change the surge protector

Inspect External Devices

Disconnect all external devices (e.g., HDMI cables, USB drives, gaming consoles) from your TV. Faulty devices or cables can cause power interruptions. Once disconnected, turn on the TV to check if it stays on.

Examine the Remote Control

1. Replace the remote’s batteries with new ones to rule out weak battery issues. Also check if any buttons on the remote are stuck, as this could send unintended signals to the TV, causing it to turn off.

2. Ensure there are no obstructions between your remote and TV’s sensor, as blocked signals can cause erratic behavior.

Perform a Soft Reset

1. Unplug your TV from the power source and hold down its physical power button for at least 15 seconds. This discharges residual power and clears temporary glitches.

2. Wait for 2–5 minutes before plugging it back in and turning it on.

Check for Standby Light Behavior

1. Observe whether the standby light at the bottom of your TV is on or off:

If OFF: This indicates no power is reaching your TV. Recheck connections or try a different outlet.

If ON: Attempt to turn on the TV using its physical power button. If it works, your remote may need troubleshooting or replacement.

2. Adjust TV Settings

Sometimes, your LG TV’s settings can inadvertently cause it to turn off unexpectedly. Adjusting specific settings can help resolve these issues and optimize your TV’s performance. Follow these steps:

Disable Auto Power Off after 4 Hours

LG TVs often have an Auto Power Off feature enabled by default to conserve energy. Disabling this setting can prevent unwanted shutdowns.

1. Press the Settings button on your remote control.

2. Navigate to All Settings > General > Systems

3.  Scroll down and select Time & Timer  > Timer

4. Locate the Auto Power Off after 4 Hours option at the end of the list and set it to Off.

Turn Off Sleep Timer and Power Off Timer

1. Press the Settings or Home button on your remote.

2. Go to All Settings.

3. Navigate to > General > Systems.

4. Under Systems select Time & Timer.

5. Scroll down to Timers

5. Turn off the Sleep Timer and Power Off Timer.

Adjust Energy-Saving Mode

LG TVs come with power-saving modes that limit brightness and may cause shutdowns under certain conditions.

1. Press the Settings button on your remote and navigate to All Settings

2. Scroll down and select Support

3. Select Energy Saving under Support

3. Turn off Energy Saving Mood

Turn off HDMI-CEC

The HDMI-CEC feature on LG TV allows HDMI connected devices to communicate and control your TV. Which means that an HDMI connected device could turn off your LG TV when this feature is turned off. Here’s how to turn it off:

1. Go to Settings > All Settings > Devices

2. Under Devices scroll to  HDMI Settings and toggle off SIMPLELINK (HDMI-CEC)

Update Software

Outdated firmware can lead to glitches, including sudden shutdowns. Ensure your TV is running the latest software version:

1. Press the Settings button on your remote.

2. Navigate to All Settings > General > Support

3. Under Support select Software Updates

4. Select Check for Updates. If an update is available, download and install it.

When Professional Help is Needed

While many LG TV issues can be resolved through basic troubleshooting, there are instances where professional assistance becomes necessary. Knowing when to seek expert help can save you time, money, and further damage to your television.

Signs That Indicate Serious Issues

1. If your TV continues to turn off unexpectedly after performing all recommended troubleshooting steps (e.g., checking power supply, adjusting settings, or updating firmware), it may indicate a deeper hardware or software issue.

2. Visible damage, such as a cracked screen, broken power cord, or damaged internal components like the power board or main control board, requires professional repair.

4. Symptoms like flickering screens, distorted colors, or no display at all may point to hardware malfunctions that need expert attention.

5. If your TV overheats frequently, even after cleaning vents and ensuring proper ventilation, it could be due to a failing internal cooling system or other critical components.

6. Issues like repeated firmware crashes, unresponsive apps, or problems that persist after a factory reset may require specialized diagnostic tools available only to certified technicians.

How to Find Qualified Technicians

1. Certified technicians have access to advanced diagnostics and up-to-date service instructions directly from LG. This ensures accurate repairs using genuine parts.

2. Research the technician’s credentials and reviews online before hiring them. Be wary of unusually low quotes or requests for upfront payments without a clear diagnosis.

3. Contact LG directly via their website, live chat, or phone support to locate authorized service centers near you. These centers are staffed with trained professionals who specialize in LG products.
