How to Turn On LG TV Without Remote (All Options)

Mkpoikana Otu - Tech Gorilla AuthorByMkpoikana Otu April 2, 2025April 2, 2025

If your LG TV remote is lost, out of batteries, or simply not functioning, you may need other ways to turn on the TV.  Modern LG TVs come equipped with alternative methods to ensure you’re never stuck. From physical buttons cleverly hidden on the TV to smartphone apps that turn your device into a remote, there are several ways to control your TV when you can’t use the remote.

Using the Physical Power Button

One of the simplest ways to turn on your LG TV without a remote is by using the physical power button. However, finding this button can be tricky since its location varies depending on the model of your TV.

Where to Find the Power Button

Modern LG TVs: On newer models, including OLED TVs, the power button is typically located in the center of the TV console underneath the screen, behind the power indicator light. If your TV has an LG logo at the bottom edge, check directly beneath it for the button.

Older LG TVs: For older models, the button could be positioned on the rare or the bottom right hand side.

Some models feature touch-sensitive buttons along the side bezels or edges of the TV. These buttons may not be physically raised, so using a flashlight to locate symbols like “Power” can be helpful.

How to Use the Power Button

1. To turn on your TV, press and hold the button for about two seconds. The screen may take up to seven seconds to power on.

2. Once turned on, tapping the button briefly can bring up a menu that lets you adjust volume, change channels, or switch inputs. Navigate through options by tapping repeatedly.

3. To turn off your TV, press and hold the button again.

If you’re still unable to locate or use the power button, consulting your user manual or searching for your specific model online can provide more precise guidance.

Using Smartphone Apps

LG provides an official app, the ThinQ app, that allows you to control your TV seamlessly. Additionally, third-party infrared remote apps can serve as alternatives for older TV models.

LG ThinQ App

The LG ThinQ app is the most reliable option for controlling your LG TV, especially for models with webOS 3.5 or later. It offers full functionality, including turning the TV on and off, controlling volume, changing inputs, and even accessing apps.

Steps to Set Up the ThinQ App. LG TV models with WebOS 3.5 and later, can be turned on and off using the ThinQ app. To use the ThinQ app:

1. Install the LG ThinQ app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play Store (Android).

2. Sign in with an LG account. You can also use a Google or Amazon account for voice control integration with Google Assistant or Alexa.

3. Connect Your TV:

  • Ensure your TV and smartphone are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
  • Open the app and select “Add a Device.”
  • Choose “TV” from the product list and select your TV from the available devices.
  • Enter the passkey displayed on your TV screen into the app to complete pairing.

Enable Power-On Features (webOS 6.0 and later):

Go to Settings → Devices → External Devices → TV On With Mobile and toggle both “Turn On via Wi-Fi” and “Turn On via Bluetooth”1.

Features of the ThinQ App:

  • Turn your TV on/off remotely.
  • Navigate menus using a virtual Magic Remote.
  • Adjust volume, change channels, and switch inputs.
  • Share content from your phone to your TV, including photos, videos, and music.

Infrared Remote Apps

For older LG TVs without Wi-Fi connectivity or webOS functionality, infrared remote apps can be a practical solution. These apps work by using the IR blaster built into certain Android devices.

Popular Infrared Apps:

  • AnyMote Universal Remote: Offers compatibility with various LG TV models.
  • Peel Smart Remote: Provides basic controls like power on/off, volume adjustment, and input switching.

Setup Process:

  1. Download an IR remote app from Google Play Store.
  2. Ensure your smartphone has an IR blaster (check device specifications).
  3. Open the app and select LG TV as the device type.
  4. Follow on-screen instructions to configure controls.

Using Universal Remote to Turn on Your TV

If you’ve lost your LG TV remote or need a versatile solution to control multiple devices, universal remotes are an excellent alternative. These remotes are designed to work with various TV models and other entertainment devices, offering convenience and functionality. They are compatible with most LG TV models, including LED, OLED, and WebOS Smart TVs, and often require minimal setup.
