How to Reboot Firestick (Three Methods)

Mkpoikana Otu - Tech Gorilla AuthorByMkpoikana Otu April 8, 2025April 8, 2025

If you have been using your Amazon Firestick for a while now, you’d agree that occasional hiccups are inevitable. Fortunately some of these issues can be fixed by simply rebooting your Firestick. For instance, rebooting your Firestick can fix issues like frozen screen, sluggish performance, or connectivity issues. Let’s guide you through the process of rebooting your Firestick.

The Three Main Ways to Reboot Your Firestick

1. Restarting via the Settings Menu

One of the easiest and most convenient ways to reboot your Firestick is through its settings menu. This method is suitable for situations where your device is responsive and you can navigate the user interface without issues. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

1. From the Firestick home screen, navigate to the Settings menu, represented by a gear icon on the far right of the screen.

2. Select My Fire TV. Depending on your Firestick model, this option might be labeled as Device or System.

3. Scroll down and choose Restart. A confirmation prompt will appear; select Restart again to proceed.

4. Your Firestick will display a “Powering Off” message and automatically reboot. You don’t need to take any further action while the device restarts.

We recommend this method if you want to refresh system memory and clear minor glitches without affecting your saved data or settings.

2. Using the Remote Shortcut

If your Firestick screen is frozen or unresponsive, you may not be able to access the settings menu to restart the device. In such cases, the quickest and most effective method is using the remote shortcut. Here’s how you can reboot your Firestick directly with your remote:

1. Press and hold the Select and Play/Pause buttons on your Firestick remote simultaneously.

2. Keep both buttons pressed for about five seconds.

3. Release the buttons, and your Firestick will automatically restart. You may see a “Powering Off” message on the screen, but in some cases, there might not be any visual confirmation.

3. Power Cycle the Firestick

Power cycling, or manually unplugging and reconnecting your Firestick is also a simple and effective way to reboot your device. You can resort to this method when your Firestick becomes completely unresponsive or frozen, and neither the settings menu nor the remote shortcut works. Here’s how to do it properly:

1.  Disconnect the Firestick’s power adapter from the wall socket or USB port on your TV. Avoid pulling out the micro-USB cable directly from the Firestick to prevent wear and tear on the port.

2. Allow at least 10–30 seconds for the device to fully power down and clear its system memory.

3. Plug the adapter back into a stable power source, ensuring it is securely connected.

Tips for Safe Power Cycling

  • Use a Reliable Power Source: Always use the original power adapter provided with your Firestick. Plugging it into a TV’s USB port may not provide sufficient power (Firesticks typically require 1A–2A of current), which could lead to performance issues or even reboot loops.
  • Avoid Frequent Unplugging: Repeatedly unplugging and replugging can cause hardware damage over time. Use this method only when other reboot options fail.

How to Reboot Your Firestick Remote

Apart from rebooting your Firestick device, you may also have to reboot the remote if it stops working or becomes unresponsive. This process can refresh its connection to the Firestick and resolve various issues like connectivity problems or unresponsive buttons. Here are the exact steps to reboot your Firestick Remote
