Firestick Remote Not Working (Detailed Fix)

Imagine settling in for a cozy movie night, snacks at the ready, only to find that your Firestick remote is not working. This  scenario is common among many Firestick users and can be very frustrating. Fortunately, this issue can be fixed with simple steps. Let’s show you how.

How to Fix Unresponsive Firestick Remote 

If your Firestick remote has stopped working, don’t worry—most issues can be resolved with a few simple steps. Here’s a detailed guide to get your remote back in action:

1. Replace the Batteries

Low or improperly inserted batteries Firestick remote to malfunction. Remove the old batteries and replace them with fresh, high-quality AAA batteries. Make sure the batteries are inserted correctly, matching the polarity (+/-) markings inside the compartment. Avoid using rechargeable batteries, as they may not provide consistent power output.

2. Restart Your Firestick Device

Temporary glitches in the Firestick’s software often disrupt communication with the remote.

  • Unplug your Firestick from its power source.
  • Wait for about 30 seconds, then plug it back in.
  • Allow the device to reboot fully before testing the remote.

3. Re-Pair the Remote

The remote may have lost its connection to the Firestick due to accidental unpairing or software issues.

  • Press and hold the Home button on your remote for at least 10 seconds.
  • Wait for on-screen confirmation that the remote has been paired successfully.
  • If pairing fails, repeat this process a couple of times. You can also use the Fire TV app on your phone as a temporary remote to navigate to pairing settings

4. Remove Physical Obstructions

While Firestick remotes use Bluetooth, physical obstructions or interference can still affect performance. Make sure there’s a clear line of sight between your remote and the Firestick device. Also remove any nearby devices that could cause interference, such as cordless phones or microwaves.

5. Check for Software Updates

Outdated software on your Firestick can lead to compatibility issues with the remote.

  • Use the left directional button on your remote and navigate to Settings
  • Scroll down to My Fire TV
  • Select About
  • Scroll down and click on Install Update
  • The update will be download and installed 

5. Reset the Remote

Most Firestick Remote

1. Unplug your Fire TV from the power source and HDMI port, then wait 60 seconds.

2. Press and hold the Left button, Menu button, and Back button at the same time for 12 seconds.

3.  Release the buttons and wait 5 seconds.

4. Remove the batteries from your remote.

5. Plug in your Fire TV and wait for the on-screen remote detection error message.

3. Put the batteries back in your remote.

4. Press the Home button .

Resetting Alexa Voice Remote (1st Generation)

1. First, unplug your Fire TV from the power source and HDMI port and wait 60 seconds.

2. Press and hold the Left button and Menu button  at the same time for 12 seconds.

3. Release the buttons and wait for another 5 seconds.

4. Remove the batteries from your remote.

5. Plug in your Fire TV and wait for the on-screen remote detection error message.

6. Put the batteries back in your remote and press the Home button on the remote.

Basic Edition Remote

1. Press and hold the Home button and at the same time, press the Menu button three times.

2. Release the Home button then press the Menu button 9 times.

4. Remove the batteries from your remote.

5. Unplug your Fire TV from the power supply and HDMI input, then wait 60 seconds.

6. Put the batteries back in your remote, and then plug in your Fire TV.

7. Once the Home screen appears, press and hold the Home button for 40 seconds.

8. Wait 60 seconds for the setup to complete.

Factory Reset Without Remote

If your remote isn’t still working, you can reset the Firestick using alternative methods. Resetting your Firestick to default can fix glitches and connectivity issues that could be interfering with the remote’s functionality

Use the Fire TV App

1. Download the Amazon Fire TV app on your smartphone (available for Android and iOS).

2. Connect your phone and Firestick to the same Wi-Fi network.

3. Use the app as a virtual remote to navigate to Settings > My Fire TV > Reset to Factory Defaults.
